Hjellsand

Hjellsand

This photo shows Hjellsand before 1950, perhaps in 1945. Bernhard Michelsen placed his camera at "Storhaugen" (The big knoll), facing south. In the background you can see the mountain tops Ressula (left) and Saltberget at Langøya.

In the foreground stands an old timber building with thatched roof, a typical "Nordland house", very common before 1900. They were replaced by buildings in two stories, often with a dormer ("ark" in Norwegian). You can see one behind the old house and a little to the left.
